Social Media Is Over

Actor James Franco declared a moratorium on his social media activity and shut down his Twitter account overnight after his controversial postings on the micro-blogging website landed him in hot water.

The 32-year-old actor, director, artist, writer, Ph.D student and soon-to-be NYU professor, flaunted his Hollywood lifestyle in a Twitter posting Thursday with a photo, from a film shoot, of Franco surrounded by a bevy of naked women.

“My thought was ‘this is my Twitter. I can do whatever I want.’ But certain companies I work with contacted me about what I was saying,” he said.

Earlier in March, the Spiderman star had tweeted a photo of an object protruding out of an open fly on a pair of his jeans, leading some fans to question his appropriateness.

Franco was also criticised for live-tweeting the Oscars – while he co-hosted the ceremony, in a performance that was reviewed as lackluster.

Given Franco’s ubiquitous presence from his writings in The Wall Street Journal, to his guest-role on a daytime soap opera, to a starring role in an Academy Award-nominated film, to his scholarly post in the ivory tower of academia – he concluded that his image was suffering from overexposure.

“Social media is over. Still up there. Going down,” he said on Thursday.

By Saturday, Franco’s Twitter account had disappeared, a little more than a month after he first opened it.

Fans can still find him on Facebook, though, where his profile pic shows him sleeping in what appears to be a university lecture.
